Slow was composed in 1990 with the financial support of an Art Council bursary.
It is a single movement piece lasting twenty five minutes and is based on the methodical juxtaposition and parrallel development of three contrasting blocks of material. The music is sustained and deliberately eschews excess harmonic activity, rhythm is used more homogenously than in previous pieces and the seventeen sections are laid end to end with only a single collision of material two-thirds of the way through the piece.
